Computer running slow?

Is your computer running slow?  Most computers gradually slow down over time, generally due to age of equipment, more programs that get loaded, and general use.  But, if your computer has massively slowed down there may be some things you can do to help.

First is to scan your computer for a virus.  Viruses, spyware, trojans, etc. can all drastically slow a computer down.  One recommended (and free) program is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.  It should go without saying , but a clean computer runs much better than an infected one.

Next is to make sure unwanted programs are not running in the background.  A way to do this is to go to Run, then type in Msconfig.  Lots of times programs that you only use on an occasional basis are set to run on start-up.  Turn this feature off and only run those programs when needed.

Another good thing to try is to delete old temporary internet files.  You can do this by going to Internet Options, then Browsing History, then choose the Delete tab.

Eliminate user accounts.  If each person in your family insists on having their own user account on the same computer, it is that many more settings that have to be loaded on the computer.  It will optimize the performance if you can reduce to 1-2 user accounts.

Check your computer’s memory, or RAM.  You need at least 512MB for most programs today.  Most virus scan program require that much memory to operate.  More memory is better, and 1-2GB is ideal.  New memory costs roughly $30-70, depending on the type needed.
