How to secure a wireless router

Securing your internet is important if you use a wireless internet connection.  An unsecured wireless network means than anyone can get on to your network and use your internet connection.  While it might seem harmless to share internet with your neighbors, you never know when an unsavory person will get on.  It is possible for someone to access your computer’s files through your network, so don’t leave your network unprotected.  Fortunately protecting your network is as easy as adding a password.  Here are basic steps on how to secure your wireless network.  These are just generic steps that work on common router brands (Linksys, Dlink, Netgear, etc.), so consult your router’s manual or manufacturer for more specific instructions.

1. Go to a computer that is directly plugged in to your router by an ethernet cord.  These steps might not work if you are just connected wirelessly.

2. Open an internet browser, then in the address bar type in 192.168.0.1 (or sometimes 192.168.1.1) and hit Enter.

3. A box should pop up asking for a username and password.  Common usernames/passwords are below.  Again, consult your manual for the correct log-in information.

4.  Once logged in successfully you will see your router settings page.  Look for a ‘Wireless’ tab, then a ‘Wireless Security’ settings tab.  Choose to enable wireless security, using WEP or WPA.  You will then be prompted to name your network (it can be named anything, but it’s a good idea not to use your last name or other identifying information).  Finally, you will need to create a password for your wireless network.  Write this password down, as you will need to enter it on any computer that wants to connect to your network wirelessly.  Apply and save any changes.

After completing these steps your network will be secure.  Any computer that will connect to the wireless network will need to know the network name and will need to enter in the new password you have created.
